Lake Tahoe weather forecast shows snow after New Year's Day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — While there remains a chance of snow showers today, the National Weather Service forecast shows no significant storms for the region over the next few days.

Lake Tahoe weather should remain mild through New Year's Day with the next report of snow showers on Friday, Jan. 2.

Meanwhile, today will be mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain and snow showers for the Lake Tahoe area. Highs 32 to 42 with southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Ridge gusts up to 75 mph.

Tonight will be partly cloudy with lows 14 to 24. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Ridge gusts up to 60 mph in the evening.

Expect partly cloudy skies on Tuesday, with highs 33 to 43 at the Lake Tahoe Basin, with lows 16 to 26.

Weather Service radar update
The National Weather Service in Reno reports that the KRGX radar on Virginia Peak that services the Lake Tahoe Basin and Carson City / Reno areas, will be down for a "prolonged period" because of wind damage to its dome.

Initial damage occurred during strong winds with 140 mph gusts on Dec. 19. Another storm system with high winds moved through the area Christmas eve into Christmas morning. Peak gusts to 95 mph destroyed the previously damaged radar dome, and damaged the now-unprotected radar dish, the National Weather Service reports.

The radar is located in western Nevada at 8,299 feet atop Virginia Peak, south of Pyramid Lake. Return to service is unknown at this time, according to the weather service.

300 migrants feared dead near India

NEW DELHI, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Indian officials said Monday about 300 migrants were missing and feared drowned after they jumped ship and tried to swim ashore near Andaman Island last week.

The Indian Coast Guard rescued 103 migrants thought to be from Myanmar or Bangladesh Saturday and Sunday, Inspector General S.P. Sharma, commander of the Andaman and Nicobar Coast Guard Region, told CNN. Officials said the people had been adrift in the Bay of Bengal for several days.

Andaman Nicobar Islands are about 850 miles east of the Indian mainland, close to Thailand

Sharma said the coast guard and Indian navy would conduct an air and sea search, but said officials held out little hope of finding more survivors, The Guardian reported.

Officials said details of how the migrants wound up adrift in the waters between India and Thailand were sketchy. The Indian news agency quoted a defense official who said that after intercepting the migrants, Thai authorities put them on a pontoon tied to a ship to deport them, the British newspaper said. The migrants apparently released the attaching cable and the pontoon began to drift.

Alexander Nevsky voted greatest Russian

MOSCOW, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Medieval Prince Alexander Nevsky has been named the greatest Russian of all time in a television poll, officials said Monday.

Nevsky, best known for stopping the advance of the Teutonic knights and Swedes into Russia in the 13th century, as well as for his diplomatic efforts, was tabbed the greatest Russian by more than 529,000 voters in a poll conducted by the Rossiya state TV channel, RIA Novosti reported.

The prince was canonized as a saint in the 16th century.

Former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, meanwhile, finished third in the poll behind Pyotr Stolypin, a prime minister from 1906 to 1911 under Czar Nicholas II. Stalin remains popular among Russians despite official condemnation of his sending millions of people to their deaths in prisons during the political purges of the late 1930s, and reportedly was leading the polling for a time this summer, RIA Novosti said.

"I congratulate everybody on the choice made by the Russians," said Sergei Mironov, speaker of Russia's upper house of Parliament. "People turned to the only saint among the 12 proposed candidates. This is the right choice."
